Prisoners Once Here, 2012, Single channel video 1:23 minutes, image still

Prisoners Once Here is a time-based video piece that acknowledges the colonization of Korea by Japan, beginning in 1908 until the end of World War II in 1945. At this historical site, anti-colonial activists were imprisoned and held captive by Japan during the colonial period and by military dictators  during the Korean war (1950-1953). In this artwork, the viewer may act as witness to the activists' lives lost through the products of their forced labour that remain – the bricks created during their imprisonment.
